Karunanidhi Health Latest Updates: 21 DMK Workers Died Due to Shock

New Delhi, Aug 1: The DMK on Wednesday said that 21 of its party workers have died unable to bear the “shock” of the illness and hospitalisation of party chief M. Karunanidhi. The party has appealed to the workers not to take any extreme step.

“I am deeply depressed to learn that 21 party workers have died unable to bear the shock of party president Kalaignar’s illness (and hospitalisation),” DMK working president M K Stalin said.

The 94-year-old veteran politician was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) on July 28 after his blood pressure dropped. He suffered a transient setback on Sunday. Later the hospital had released a bulletin in the night saying, “There was a transient setback in the clinical condition of Karunanidhi, DMK President and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. With active medical support, his vital signs are normalising.”

The party top leader said he is sad by such deaths and conveyed his condolences to the family members. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.

Earlier on Tuesday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited him and described his condition as stable. “I met him, he is fine, stable. I am quite happy to see that he is doing well. He is a very tough person like the people of Tamil Nadu. He has the spirit of Tamil Nadu in him,” he told reporters after visiting Karunanidhi.

Actor-politician Rajinikanth also paid a visit to the Kauvery Hospital to inquire about the health of ailing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi, on Tuesday night. “I came to inquire about the country’s most senior leader. He was sleeping. I inquired about his health from his family members. I pray to the almighty for his speedy recovery,” he told media.

Meanwhile, heavy crowds continued to remain in place outside the Kauvery Hospital, praying for the good health and speedy recovery of their leader. Hundreds of police personnel have been deployed to control the gathered supporters.

The DMK chief, who is on intravenous antibiotics, was earlier undergoing treatment at his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai.
