Jalandhar, PUNJAB—Four low intensity bombs exploded at 10:30 pm on Friday in a police station in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.
Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora, who was in the city to attend the closing ceremony of All India Police Hockey tournament, immediately rushed to the spot along with senior police officials.
In comments to the media, Arora said a forensic investigation has been launched into the case to ascertain the ‘type’ of explosives.
Eyewitnesses said the explosions were triggered by a group of miscreants who flung the explosives into the station. While one policeman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, three others sustained minor injuries.
News of the explosions spread panic in this northern town, and triggered memories of the 2015 attack on a police station in Pathankot. While police are yet to ascertain who is behind the attack, some have termed it the work of a faction within the police department who are unhappy with the three month tenure extension granted to DGP Arora.
This was his first visit after his extension announced early this week.
