Taking to Twitter, the Congress chief said it was a ”planned brutal conspiracy” and a “shrewd scheme” to convert the black money of PM Narendra Modi’s friends. He said there was nothing innocent about this “scam” and claimed that giving any other meaning to it would be an insult to the intelligence of the people.

Tweeting in Hindi, Rahul said, “Note ban was a pre-meditated cruel conspiracy. This scam was a scheme to convert the black money of Prime Minister’s suit-booted friends to white. Nothing was innocent about this scam. Drawing any other meaning of it would be an undermining the intelligence of the nation.”

The entire day saw senior Congress leaders attacking the Centre for the demonetisation exercise. Former prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the “scars and wounds” demonetisation caused were becoming more visible with time. Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma alleged that it was “a big money-laundering project”. He claimed that the banking system was struggling and the Modi government wanted to “snatch” the contingency reserves of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Questioning why the BJP had not issued an advertisement congratulating people on the second anniversary of demonetisation, party chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala called demonetisation the “biggest scam” of independent India. “The time has come for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take responsibility for this destruction and apologise…Time has come that the scam of notebandi is probed and those guilty are caught. The country will not forget, it remembers and is ready to hit back with the might of its votes,” Surjewala said.

Sharma announced that the Congress will hold a protest on Friday to mark the second anniversary of demonetisation.
