New Delhi, Apr 23: A surgeon at the Sushruta Trauma Centre run by the Delhi government operated upon the leg of a patient who was injured on the head. The patient, Vijendra Tyagi was admitted with head and face injuries. But the surgeon confused Tyagi for another patient who had a leg fracture and was admitted in the same ward.
“The surgeon drilled a small hole into my father’s right leg to put a pin. It was done under anesthesia so he didn’t even realise the mistake or raise an alarm,” Ankit Tyagi, Vijendra’s son told a newspaper. When he found out about the incident, he informed the hospital authorities.
The surgery was conducted around 9;30 am on April 19. Corrective procedure for removing the pin was carried out within hours. A committee was formed to look into the matter and the doctor has been barred from conducting any further surgeries without supervision.
Even though the patient is now unable to walk, the family has decided against taking the matter to the court. A similar incident took place at Fortis Shalimar Bagh two years ago. The surgeons had operated the right leg of a 24-year-old patient while his left leg which was actually injured was neglected.
Another case of medical negligence was reported from AIIMS. One of the surgeons conducted an arteriovenous fistula, a procedure to access blood from a patient suffering from chronic kidney disease on a patient who did not have any kidney-related illness. The patient had come to Delhi in the hope that she would get a relief from her abdomen pain after being treated here.
