New Delhi, July 14: A day after former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were arrested by anti-corruption officials, the Congress party on Saturday took to Twitter and taunted PM Narendra Modi about his friendship with the former Pak counterpart. Sharing a photograph of the Prime Minister and Sharif walking together holding hands during Modi’s visit to Lahore in December 2015, Congress party asked,”Nawaz Sharif has been arrested on corruption charges. We’d like to know what his dear friend, PM Modi has to say about this.”

Earlier on Friday, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, had also taunted Sharif over his ‘friendship’ with PM Modi. “Beginning to wonder why whenever Nawaz Sharif is in trouble, there is increasing tension along Pakistan’s borders and a rise in terrorist acts? Is it a mere coincidence?” Khan had tweeted shortly after Jamiat Ulema-e Islam (F) leader Akram Durrani’s convoy was attacked in Bannu region in Pakistan that left four dead.
According to Dawn, Khan’s tweet was based on a slogan frequently raised by PTI workers and supporters at its public meetings, “Modi Ka Jo Yaar Hai, Ghaddar Hai, Ghaddar Hai (friend of Modi is a traitor)” and his tweet was aimed at accusing the two leaders of creating tension both in Pakistan and at the borders to manipulate the situation in favour of the PML-N.
The former PM of Pakistan and his daughter were arrested by anti-corruption officials late on Friday after they arrived in Lahore from Abu Dhabi following their conviction in a corruption case.

Nawaz and Maryam were flown in a small private plane to Islamabad. From Islamabad, Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, and his daughter Maryam Nawaz was sent to Seihala Rest House, declared as temporary sub-jail. Sharif, along with Maryam, was arrested as they returned to Lahore city to serve a 10-year and seven-year jail term, respectively, on corruption charges, officials said. Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer, Khawaja Haris will file an appeal on Monday against the decision by the court in Avenfield Reference case, Waqt News reported.
