New Delhi, Apr 23: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra reportedly had a 20-minute-long meeting with judges of the Supreme Court minutes after Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected an impeachment motion against him on Monday. Though a morning meeting of the CJI with apex court judges is a regular affair, what unusual was the length of the huddle.

The morning meeting between the CJI and Supreme Court judges usually lasts for a couple of minutes. However, the meeting between CJI Dipak Misra and judges lasted for 20 minutes. However, it is not clear that what was discussed during the meeting. Naidu rejected the Congress-led opposition’s notice for impeachment of justice Misra before the Supreme Court began its proceedings for the day.

“Having considered the material contained in the notice of motion and reflected upon the inputs received in my interaction with legal luminaries and constitutional experts, I am of the firm opinion that the notice of the motion does not deserve to be admitted. Accordingly, I refuse to admit notice of motion,” Naidu said on Monday.

The rejection of the notice comes a day after he held the consultations with such experts to determine the maintainability of the motion. The sources said Vice President Naidu met several experts after he re-scheduled his travel plans considering the seriousness of the matter. Seven opposition parties led by the Congress had last week moved a notice before him for impeachment of the CJI on five grounds of “misbehaviour”.

The motion was signed by 71 parliamentarians out of which seven members had retired before the motion was submitted to Naidu. This is the first time ever that an impeachment notice has been filed against a sitting CJI.
